No, I don't believe Dignam was a mole for the mob.

He kills Sullivan, the mob mole. He might kill him because he found out that he was the reason Costigan was killed...or that he had been the mole all along...or he holds him responsible for Queenan's death. (That's why they fought and Dignam quit.) Or probably all of those reasons!

Now that he's no longer a cop, Dignam decides to exact some justice of his own against the rat Sullivan.

Ok people answering the question that have the nerve to say he is a mole are completely dumb, and apparently have no clue what was going on in the movie.

NO Dignam was not a mole, for the love of god. He is the only one in the whole movie that didn't trust Sullivan the entire movie. If you actually pay attention to the movie, and watch how Dignam acts around Sullivan, you will see from what he says and what he does that he knows Sullivan is the rat. He is pissed, and he was on leave when he shot him, because he before then tried to get him to admit that he was the rat, and that is why Sullivan's last words were "ok, ok" because of the many attempts before that made by Dignam to get Sullivan to tell on himself, or catch him in a lie. Just watch the movie again, you'll see what I mean.

Wow I think that you need to see the movie for the first time here, cause obviously if you saw the movie then you would not ask a question like that. First of Dignam had beef with Sullivan because he knew that Sullivan was rat. To say that Dignam was the mole (pardon my spoilers since you probably didn’t see the movie) is completely inane . Ya damn skippy, that you are not picking up on something here. You need to pick up a copy of the Departed on DVD , put in the dvd player press play, and watch the movie. Also while watching the movie please have a notepad ready to take notes for 2 reasons. One so you know who the characters are. And two, so you don’t ask any more dumb questions like this. Also the first response from the chick is just as dumb as your question so maybe you should buy some popcorn and soda and invite her over to watch the movie with you so she can be educated in the movie as well

No, not at all in any way. Look at of the people that died in the movie. Matt, Leo and Jack. They all three were rats. That is why they all had to die. Dignam was not a rat, so he went on to live. I believe the movie was trying to say no matter what side of the fence you are on, if you are a rat the nature will be to die. Awesome movie.

I think He was a mole and got greedy and killed off Costigan the "patsy". Which by the way totally freaked me out.
