On a cable modem? after recently switching to a longer cable since the one provided by my isp was too short my net connection is running a little slow. Does the cable make a difference or is it just a coincedence?

I'm about 4 feet from the modem

Your ethernet cable can take speeds up to 100M/bit, if therefore your connection speed is faster than 100M/bit, which is unlikely then yes it would slow it down as its a bottle neck. The length of the cable is negligable. hope this helps

I've read some people say it does. I ran 35 meter ethernet cable from my first floor bedroom (where the router is) to my loft extension and didn't notice any speed reduction.

I'm wireless now and don't notice any speed reduction again.. from first floor to loft extension.

Possibly it also depends on cable modem and its spec (?).
