In literature, Americans tagged Whitman as the greatest American poet of all time for the fact that he was really good especially when he first introduced the free verse while the Dickinson had used lots of genres although she always use the word "master" but i like the poem "I am nobody"... I hope this could help you.

My son, the philosophy and literature major, says Whitman. My wife, the English teacher, says Dickenson. I agree with JCBoyle, the answer is impossible to prove.

I think they have both had a great deal of influence over American lit., and trying to find which is more important is like asking who had more influence over English lit: Chaucer or Dickens? There is no right answer.
