1.The negative terminal is less likely to spark or arc
2. when you are turning the wrench on the Positive terminal and you hit the frame or any metal you will experience a shocking sensation and sparks flying everywhere. If you do that on the Negative then your only obstacle is the Positive terminal.
I usually get a roll of duct tape and wrap up the wrench. Unless I used it on the van

current runs positive to negative. Negative is a ground, so the current is more displaced by this. When removing the negative cable first, there is less of a chance of sparking the battery, and causeing voltage spikes in the system destroying electrical componats, or in a worse case senario situation, the spark ignites the exhaust gasses from the battery and the battery explodes. I have never seen a battery explode, but I have seen the aftermath, and it sounds like a shotgun going off when it does explode. Disconecting the Positive first has an extremely high chance of sparking, since the current is trying to flow fromt he battery and has no where else to go unlike the negative that is grounded to the vehicle and the resistance of the componants disipating the current, reduces the chance for spark at the termanial. Ground to ground will cause you no damage, Live to ground will.

Once the negative cable is removed, you can ground the positive cable to the frame with a wrench without creating a spark because the circuit is not complete. While removing the negative cable it doesn't hurt to ground it out because it is already grounded.

If you place a wrench on the negative cable and then while loosening the bolt you touch the body or other metal part of the vehicle, nothing happens. Try that with the wrench on the positive terminal with the neg still attached. See if you can melt the wrench into your hand.

if you disconect the negative first then you happen to touch ground with the wrench taking off the positive then there will be no sparks

So there will be no spark above a battery that sometimes has gases leaking out that can explode.
