My friends and I have been pondering this inaccuracy. Why are the Detroit Red Wings included as being in the Western Conference in the NHL and the Detroit Pistons included in the Eastern Conference in the NBA? Is there some sort of demarcation line running between the "Joe Luis Arena" and the "Palace of Auburn Hills" that separated the East from West? This just seems crazy to me as Detroit is not even close to being in doubt of being on the Eastern side of the USA I mean Dallas is closer to the north south line of the USA than Detroit yet the Stars & the Mavericks are both in the west in their respective competitions.

I hope someone out there can help me out with an answer to this one!

simple geography... the 15 eastern/Southeastern most teams in the NHL are in the "eastern conference".

in the NBA the 15th most eastern teams are again in the east.

Now the NBA and NHL dont have teams in ALL the same cities. So this leaves Detroit and Chicago... being one of the eastern most teams in the NBA and Western most in the NHL.

on a random side note:
The Pittsburgh Penguins now say they are actively seeking relocation. While this doesn't mean a move is imminent, the team is a step closer to playing its home games in Kansas City next season.

This raises the question: Would the NHL place a Missouri-based franchise in the Western Conference? If it did, would this open the door for the Detroit Red Wings to shift over to the Eastern Conference? The scenario is not out of the question.

there are not enough teams on the West side for NHL to make it balanced so NHL officials made it that way.
