To open a coconut, remove the outer husk (if not purchased already removed) and pierce two of the three eyes of the fruit (one for the juice to come out of, one to enable air to go in); drain the juice from the fruit. Since coconuts have a naturally-forming fracture point, they can be opened by taking a heavy knife, such as a meat cleaver, and striking the coconut with the flat edge of the knife. Or you can use a flat-bladed screwdriver and a hammer (which is easier, and may be safer than using a cleaver). After inserting the screwdriver slightly, twist it to crack the shell. The coconut should then be turned, and this process repeated until there is a contiguous crack in the shell around the entire fruit. Afterwards, the fruit can be separated at this fracture point.

Hold coconut over a bowl in one hand such that it rests in the middle of your palm, with the tip on one end and the eyes on the other.
Whack the coconut with the back (that is to say the blunt side) of a large knife (preferalbe a butcher's knife) a few times all around the center until it cracks open cleanly into two nearly equal halves. Make sure you use the blunt side of the knife
Catch the juice in the bowl as it drains from the cracks.

What I do is poke the eyes and mouth of the coco (that's monkey) with a screwdriver and a hammer so that I can get the coconut water out (the water is good for you! you can same a smoothie with it! or put it in a herbal tea or something!) and then I just throw it up into the air above my cement garage and it usually splits right in two! then to take off the meat, you take a flathead screwdriver and a hammer and kinda chisel the meat off!
you can make stuff out of the shells too! I give them to the kids I babysit for, they like to play with them, but you can also put them at the bottom of an aquarium or as plantholders or many other things! use your imagination!

put it in a plastic bag. Whip it on concrete (outside, balcony). Do this several times. Now the outtershell is cracked and can be scraped off wit sumthing hard. Most likely all the juice will leak out.

the true way to do it is with a big sharp machete...ok you put the coconut on the ground then you crack it with the machete

The island guys use a sharp machete and just lop it into two pieces. Now all you need is a machete, and you are all set.
