id depends on how good your motherboard is, your mother board may not suport a very fast cpu, yes you can get a new cpu for 800 but i dnot nkow if they will have one for an older computer. you could almost buy a whole new computer. i would save up $200 more so that you have $1000 then you can buy a fairly decent computer.
also, try to get one with xp for gaming, i'v heard vista doesn't work to well yet for that.

gaming cpu? you mean gaming computer or an actual cpu like AMD Athlon 64?
if possible, get a credit card and buy a computer from online retailers like Newegg.com or TigerDirect.com, their prices are way lower than the stores in real life because they don't have as much overhead e.g.no salespeople or shipping costs to stores.

It can be done but you will have to look for sales. Prices on local store can cost you from 10-50% more. Your best bet is to see if you got a FRY's around your area and or pc clubs. But it would be a new system not and upgrade.

Newer faster CPUs generally require newer faster motherboards and quite often new memory chips, although for $800 (really quite a lot of money) you might be able to get a screaming system upgrade.

'Problem is, unless you enjoy poking around your system and have a lot of patience, it's not likely to work without a lot of tweaking and troubleshooting of new drivers etc.

Solution: save up for a machine that's been tested and proven.

A pc, yes. A good gaming pc, no. Most *good* gaming computers are $1500 upwards. you could buy a cheaper one and add in the necessary equipment, but you need to know what your doing. I would advise that you save up alot more for a gaming pc.
