Yeah Phil and Darrel were just too different. Phil is super serious all the time and demands perfection. Darrel just wanted to party hard all the time -- he was almost like a hippie except he played badass metal guitar riffs.
As soon as they had enough money and fame that Darrel didn't have to worry about anything anymore, he was happy to just wander through life in a haze. Once he had it, he just wanted to enjoy it.
Phil's demands for professionalism, perfection, and constant pushing to achieve greater heights were something that just brought Darrel down to Earth, and he usually didn't appreciate it.
If you ask me, the saddest part is that Darrel didn't live long enough for them to find a happy middle ground. Darrel could have used some of the discipline that Phil demanded of him, and Phil could have used Darrel's influence to let go every now and then and lighten up.
Sure, Phil became a bit of an ****** when he didn't get his way, but I think if they had bridged the personality gap, most of the ridiculous, egomaniacal things he said would have been a non-issue. His kind of alpha personality is common in music and alot of his complaints were justified, even if he did voice those issues in indefensible ways.

Phil Anselmo said he wanted to take a break form music but ended up doing other musical projects out side of Pantera after saying he wouldn't.. There were also negative words siad about Dimebag by Phil. I'm not really sure if Phil said anything negative or if the media started the feud between the two.

Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, that formed in 1981.[1] Influenced by classic thrash metal acts such as Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax, Pantera was a key formulator of the groove metal (post-thrash) subgenre of heavy metal music.

Due to long-standing internal conflicts, Pantera dissolved in 2003. The following year, the band's guitarist, Dimebag Darrell, was shot and killed on-stage while performing with his new band, Damageplan.
