Have a small narrow space in my yard that is backed by a privacy fence. Looking to put something in that space and someone recommended daylilies. I have some Oriental lilies already and while beautiful, once they finish blooming, they look awful. The stems start yellowing and all the petals fall off leaving just the ugly stamins. Are daylilies like that too? Would they be too big in a narrow space? It gets full sun. Thanks!

Daylillies are very similar. What you need to do is pick off the flower heads almost every day. Pinch and snap! When you have nothing left but stems, cut them down to about two or three
inches from the ground. Daylillies will give you beautiful green foliage and they do great in full sun. There are so many colors to choose from, I think that you would be happy with them.

Emily Dew,

i am also in zone 5.

i have around a 100 varieties of Daylilies. i have most of them in a space that is about 20' x 5'. very narrow.

they do great in almost all zones.
you can not kill them.

they like full sun to partial shade.

when the bloom is done, pinch off.

they are easy to divide. this should be done about every 3 years.

plant some! you will not be disappointed!

Daylilies will do fine there. Pick out a cultivar that is evergreen, so the foliage looks good the entire growing season. Stelela di Oro is a good one, as are some of the spider types. With the Stella you will get rebloom, too. Bonus!
