Incidentally concerning some previous posters: The issue of impressment had nothing to do with the War Hawks. They lived in the west and could not have cared less about impressment. That was a non-issue to a Kentucky farmer.

Mainly, the conquest of Canada and extension of the midwestern agrarian frontier into Ontario.

The other reasons (e.g., resentment against the Broitish naval blockade of Napoleonic Europe and of British impressment of sailors from American ships) were also reasons, but they were secondary to the primary driving force of land acquisition. They did, however, serve to unite Americans in areas beyond the frontier behind the war. The shallowness of this unity, however, is shown by the fact that New England, which was the area most directly affected by British naval measures seriously debated withholding suppport fromt he war (look up the Hartford convention).

This is from memory of high school, many, many years ago, I believe the Brits were over-utilizing the practice called "Impressment", which was basically stealing American sailors. They would board an American ship and kidnap American sailors to work in the British Navy, not a nice way to show respect for the new country.
