YUP!
There are plenty of documented cases in fact. Rabies can even be transmitted via aerosol (bat rabies in caves).
Rabies appears in 2 forms: Furious Rabies and Dumb Rabies. Furious rabies is dangerous, but can be easily spotted and thus transmission is avoided.
With dumb rabies, the animal may appear VERY NORMAL and lick you as a "friendly gesture", but it is actually already transmitting the virus to you. The rabies virus is such a devious organism. It modifies the victim's behaviour to ensure the propagation of its species.
Rabies takes about 3 months to develop (from infection to appearance of symptoms). Once symptoms appear, either furious or dumb, the virus starts descending from the brain to the salivary glands via its innervating nerves, and is secreted in the saliva. The virus starts "modifying" the animal's brain and behavior to facilitate transmission. The animal may live for up to 2 wks more to ensure transmission to its next victim. Rabies virus is a very devious organism really.
Some cases of lick transmission involve puppies. The dam may have been infected before or around pregnancy. Two months later, the dam gives birth to infected pups. In this case, the pups will develop rabies over a period of up to 3 months and during this period, the unsuspecting owners are at risk of infections through the lick of the seemingly "safe" pups.
Was it you? You need immediate help! Was the animal "suspicious" of rabies or was it symptomatic? Have it diagnosed. Meanwhile, you should get to a rabies center for "post exposure shots" - this is standard procedure for suspect cases, just to be sure.

DONT MESS WITH RABIES. IF YOU CATCH IT, YOU WILL DIE.
So if you suspect you were licked or bitten or scratched by a rabid animal, see a doctor, today.
Rabies symptoms can take anywhere from 10 days to 4 months (and rarely even longer) to show up. It is possible to get rabies from a lick if you had a scratch where you were licked, or were licked in the eyes or mouth (mucous membranes). Generally the first symptom is tingling at the site of the infection, which progresses along the nerves to the spinal column and brain. Then it wreaks havoc on the nervous system, causing intermittent seizure-like symptoms, drooling, inability to swallow, fear of water, sometimes aggression, and progressive paralysis. Death occurs when the diaprhagm becomes paralyzed and the victim suffocates. Pretty nasty way to go.
The ONLY way to diagnose rabies is to examine the brain tissue of the diseased animal/human under a microscope. The virus leaves very distinct changes (called inclusions) in brain tissue.
Rabies shots do not treat rabies, rabies shots are a VACCINE that prevents you from getting the disease. The shots MUST be given BEFORE symptoms appear. If there's ANY possibility you've been exposed to rabies, get the shots and have the animal in question euthanized and tested. Start the shots while you are waiting for the test results.

rabies is carried by the salava on a affected animal thrua bite or puncture thru the skin so the animal would have to bite you to give you rabies but also a scratch can infect the victim

Animals with hydrophobia don't lick, they BITE, AND YES, you can get it!!! The animal will need to be put down as soon as possible, so if it is yours, get it to a vet, or put it down yourself. DON"T let it have a chance to bite you! If it is someone Else's, stay clear! This is a very dangerous problem, so let the owner know, You could save their life!!!

Generally from a bite, but if the animals licks you and you have any kind of open cut or sore, it might be transmitted.
