for who? the north? or the south? For the north, it allowed for a central government and control over state's rights. Lots of ppl mistakenly think the war was about slavery. There are references where Lincoln clearly stated that he did not care about the plight of the slave. He just jumped on the band wagon and made a central issue of the war, because it was a cause that many could rally around. Actually, the civil war was all about state's rights to be independent and to determine their own futures. The industrial north wanted everything centralized. Taxes, education, control of the populace. Now look...states are treated like bastard children, instead of INDEPENDENT soveign entities, as they were originally designed. That is why this country was called the United STATES of America. We were all supposed to have our own independence and only banded together to form a central government to provide for protection from foreign agressors, to work on trade treaties and to provide for commerce. So...the only positive effect I can think of would be that it allowed for our country (union) to grow very rapidly and expand globally, due to strength in numbers. The down side is that we are all controlled from a central government that treats us like wayward children. Going the same way of Rome. Central government geographically, politically and emotionally removed from the individual people and their concerns.
