If I wanted to try out for a varsity poms / dance squad at my high-school, on a general basis, what dance skills would I need to have mastered to make both cuts and the team?

Well... normally for poms you need all three splits(left, right and center), a toe touch and high kicks. And sometimes they need you to be able to do a good back catch or back bend. It depends. But even if you don't have the flexibility, still try out. Sometimes they only need a few flexible people. Good luck!

Probably hip hop. That's usually the most popular type of dancing to use in performance, especially with a dance team. But remember, everything comes from ballet and that's where you get your strength, so if you can, take a class or two of ballet. It will make you stronger in everything.
