Whoever says to only hand tighten it is living in fantasy world. You can't get that good a grip on most filters in cars now days to do that. Just tighten 3/4 of a turn after the gasket contancts the engine. Don't go over or you'll have a lot of fun getting it off next time. And if you use a strap wrench, make sure you only use it around the top of the filter or you'll crush it.

Really depends on individual strength. Don't use a wrench to tighten it. By hand turn 3/4 of a turn after the seal makes contact. Unless you have super strength you can't over tighten it by hand.

turn the filter snug and then just a little slight more twist. the way you are talking you will have trouble getting it back off. the engine vibration has a tendency to tighten the filter as you drive.
