I would agree that the Syrian Hamster is the most docile and easy to handle, but what kind do you currently have? If that kind is working for you, then stick with what you know and like. Teddy Bears are just long haired Syrians. They are very fuzzy and very cute! I have found the dwarf varieties to be more skittish and bitey.
Just be aware that hamsters are pretty much solitary animals and if you put two together that are not littermates, they will probably fight. Especially with the Syrians. I beleive that some of the dwarf species can be kept together, but they also should be littermates and you need a very large cage so that they can each have their own territory.
If you will have each hamster in it's own cage, then look around and see which type strikes your fancy, do some research on how to care for the new type and go for it!

without a doubt a syrian hamster ( other wise known as a teddy bear hamster or goldern hamster) they are the larger of the breed and are much easier to handle and care for. I dont know why, but I would get a male to as they seem alot more laid back and chilled! I find tham to be a bundle of joy, he will keep you amused for hours on end, and seem to love human attention much more than the other breeds. Have lots of fun with your new friend, but one bit of advice, syrian hamsters are solitary hamsters and must be housed on their own.

Eh, hamsters are hamsters. Its all about the personal hamster itself. Like humans, we are supposed to be compassionate however not all of us are. Just go to a pet store and see which of the hamsters is friendly. Its about the personality not the breed.

I suggest that you get a teddy bear hamster... they may be bigger than the dwarf, but they are definetly more friendly and have better people bonds...... they can be moody and territorial at times though.... I used to breed them, but they multiply like crazy.......... it takes them 3 weeks justation and they can have up to 16 babies at one time!
