When I do my running start for triple jump, my measurements always vary and I scratch on occasion or studder step because my stride is always inconsistant. I get a measurment for my approach but occasionally it'll be off by sometimes several inches. I'm capable of reaching 40+ feet on triple jump but I rarely get the opportunity because my stride is so inconsistant. Sometimes I'll get as short as 34 feet because my strides are so messed up. Anyone know how to fix this? Some of my strides are longer than the other and it always varies each attempt.

Without being able to see your runways that's pretty tough to make a guess at. What does your coach say?

Having to go blind: once you're fully warmed up/loose, your balls-out sprint stride should be pretty consistent. The number of steps from your marker to the board should always be the same, of course. Is your first-5-steps ritual always the same and do you try to make it relaxed and consistent every time? ie rather than trying to explode off the mark, a few lean in/lean back using your arms while deep breathing as you visualize your first 5 or so trotting/jogging steps before you break into your sprint speed (hehe a friend of mine used to go through the blonde sprinter's mantra from Gallipoli every single time to keep his head where he needed it). I don't know your routine .. example walk, trot, trot, jog, jog, then explode atfter being at 50% speed for your first 5 steps .. maybe you take 7 to get to your explode point intead - Again, without being able to see it, I'd guess that the breakdown is in the first 10-15 meters before you attain full speed. Once you are at full speed, your stride should be pretty uniform.

Look at
a) your first dozen steps, and concentrate on making them the same over and over and over and over. Have a friend mark your step 5, step 9, etc. They need to be the same, every time. Your walk, trot, trot, jog, jog (or however you do your start) should cover the same distance consistently. If your spacing is coming up erratic by step 5, for example, something is wrong with your initial relaxed trotting steps. By step 9, you are at a full sprint .. if you are good steps 1-5 but are coming up inconsistent by step 9, you need to look at the step# in which you choose to start exploding into full speed. It's all about keeping the same internal/external rhythm, always. While your friend marks you, it's important to be focusing down the runway like it were for real and not looking at your feet .. let your friend do the marking and you worry about being the same robot every time you leave your marker at the back of the runway.

b) stop stutter stepping in practice - it gets you used to stutter stepping .. never do it, even in practice, ever. If it looks like you are not going to be on mark at the board, just run through .. once it's in your head to stutter as an option, you'll be thinking about doing it beforehand - always just run through or make the jump as is. Run through 50 times in a row without taking a jump if you have to while you're analyzing your rhythm. Never stutter - it's very important to break yourself of the habit.

When you do run through, you need to be going full speed, elbows pumping .. after you've taken a good, hard look at your first 12 steps for a few weeks, you need to have a practice friend again be looking how far behind/over the board you are. You can't maintain your rhythm/power in jump mode and still be looking down to mark your own footing .. you have to be trying to emulate a jump for real with head up and eyes forward.

Last .. this obviously isn't something you are going to fix in a week. You have to find the bad habits and then break them. For the short term, assuming you are already into meets/school competition, you might be better off making your competition measurements such that you are gauging to take off at the back of the board or a few inches behind it even .. if you're a 40+ jumper but you often jump 36 b/c of a stutter, you'll possibly do your team better by jumping a solid 39-39.5 in the interim while you are ironing out the rhythm issues. One thing to keep in mind if you do this: you are going to be tempted to overstride on that last step to actually reach the board, which defeats the purpose and will screw your jumps like a stutter will.
