most of the manufacturers reccommend 80-90 gear oil. A can of chain wax is five dollars and will last two seasons how cheap can you be?
most of the chains are o-ring these days and you only need a little lube to do the job

Don't go to the dealer! Go to Joe Whoever's bike shop. Get the generic lube. Heck, Bel-Ray aint even expensive there. If you insist on trying to save a buck, use 80W90 gear oil. It's what my Honda calls for. Every 300 miles. Don't forget you've got to clean up what slings off, too. You wind up spending what you save on soap. And give yourself more work to do. The grease thing is effective, but messy, and what to do with the leftover grease? Another coffee can?
The real thrift is in the can.
BTDT, and I can't take from the budget to provide for my ride.

just about any grease will do... I remove the chain & put it in a pan of grease on the oven plate on low heat for half an hour........this melts the grease into the chain....(do not do this to an o-ring chain).. while its of you can check the ware on the chain by checking how far it bends sideways...there are lots of m/cycle sites on the web...go surfing & learn some stuff...

If you really are that tight for money or live way out in the sticks...try chain saw oil. Same purpose, just messier. Good luck.

I have heard people speak highly of the spray on white lithium grease available at the "Lowes" store (sorta like Home Depot) comes in the typical sized can. I didn't hear the price, but, its no doubt cheaper than the typical bike shop products.
