According to a few sites I've seen, about 1200 people live there. Most of them are scientists researching as the other folks have said, but it almost sounds like there might be a few permanent residents. They better be good at fishing!

Yes they do for fixed time limits working at Government owned research stations.

Not the place I would be sinking alot of cash into for long term investments.
