there is no best and most effective one, if you don't have the latest updates for it. Each one of them have their own flaws. But in general, they all are working just fine comparable. Give the free ones a try, they are effectively as the paid ones, at http://filehippo.com.
One thing to remember: Never install more than 1 anti-virus in your computer, they are conflicting each other if you have more than one installed. The rule doesn't apply for antispyware programs, you can have as many as you want, because not all are created equally. Why do you need more than 1 if 1 is just as good, you may ask. Here's the main reason: not all antispyware can find everything like the other can, one program may missed this, but the other program may finds it, so they are like complimenting each other.

Ive done a whole lot of searching and comparing and found that zone alarm is the best firewall and has a decent anti virus and its not a whole lot of money or a system hog. as far as antispyware is concerned, ive had alot of success with webroot spy sweeper. I would recommend checking out cnet and trying some of the software and reading there reviews.

I find NOD32 to work well as an antivirus utility and it uses very little of your CPUs processing power. For antispyware try Spysweeper Search and Destroy. If you want to learn about all of the best options out there they visit:

and

Try Avast, AVG virus scanners.
NAV is scum!!!!!
you need a fire wall Zone Alarm is decent. The one that comes with XP sucks
You need programs to find spyware. Spybot Search And Destory and Adaware are decent. Spysweeper is commercial and better.
Lastly check out Pc-cillin from Trend Micro. This detects viruses by their activity. meaning it can detect new and unknown viruses.

It covers, viruses, spamkiller, adware, phishing filter, popup blocker, etc, all for $40 at Walmart.
As far a Avast . . .
