I am about to graduate from auto mechanics, and I am shopping for a 1/2" drive impact wrench. However I am lost. The price is not consistent with torque output (some are expensive with normal torque output, while those on eBay at 1000 ft/lb are asking 200$). Therefore I want to know how to select a good impact wrench? (what weight is considered light?, what torque is better?, what brand, speed, clutch technology, etc.??) I am looking the best quality/price ratio under 250-300$. Many thanks!

the question you need to ask yourself is how often are you going to use the tool.... when it comes to air tools, if you spend more the tools will last longer.... i work for grainger, we sell 3 brands of impact guns.... ingersoll rand, dayton and westward.... ingersoll rand are good quality, highest price of the three.... but they will last...even just looking at ingersoll rand, we sell general duty and industrial duty... and you also need to know how much cfm is going to be available to you.... if you go to www.grainger.com and type in part number 3yy33 its a good IR gun, industrial duty, 650 ft lbs of torque for $231 bucks, but you need 21 cfm to run it... if you type in part number 4y348 its general duty, up to 350 ft lbs of torque, needs 5.4 cfm, for $231 ...... we have impact guns that go from under a hundred bucks up to $2000.... if its a tool you will use every day, and alot during the day, dont go with general purpose, go with an industrial strength tool .... and make sure you will have whatever cfm needed for that tool

I have a 900 ft/lbs Ingersoll Rand that I bought used at a yard sale for $100. It's been a great purchase. I've used it alot, but unlike you I'm not a professional who uses it all day. It looks and feels indestructible. One thing I've found is that the diameter of the air hose makes a huge difference. I originally had a 125 psi tank with a cheap little hose and thought the gun was the problem. Once I bought a good 3/8" hose I could get any nut loose!

I'd look for a good used one like mine, wear it out and save your money until you can buy a Proto, Mac or Snap On. My advise is if one of the pros on this forum doesn't answer, just drop by an auto shop and ask a professional. Any mechanic i know is happy to talk tools for a few minutes, and it might just get you a good contact for a job.

I can tell you from experience that more expensive is not always better. I have impact guns from Mac, Snap-On, and Ingersoll-Rand. My Mac has spent more time with the Mac jobber getting fixed than I have used it (owned it 2 years now). When it worked, it was great. The Snap-On, I traded after 3 months. It didn't have the power of the I-R, and was double the cost. Now I have a few I-R guns. My favorite still is my 18 year old IR231. Cost me $50 a few years back and has been rebuilt once. I also use the Titanium IR guns, and yes they are a little pricey, but well worth it. I'll never buy another Mac or Snap-On again.

First you will need to work out what you will be using the air impact tool for and how often. This question will give you an idea of whether you need a better quality wrench. The best known makes include: Ingersoll Rand, NitroCat, Campbell Hausfield. The next question is how much do you want to pay? Again the more you want to spend the better quality impact wrench you will get.

I have been a mechanic for 20 years and would recommend Snap On they are pricey but are well worth it you can get about 3 years of constant use from it. The good thing about Snap On is that you can send it in to them to rebuild or trade in.
