The 1st amendment deals with freedom of religion. Seperation of church & state is NOT in the constitution.

The first amendment, which states:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

It's that first clause you need to pay attention to: it essentially says the government can't do anything about religion, either promoting it or denouncing it.

The First Amendment.

And it doesn't HAVE to specify a separation of Church and State. That separation is implicit in the establishment clause and the free exercise clause--the only way they can both be protected is through the separation of Church and State.
