I want to redirect a website I run to a domain name of my choice. I'm curious to know if there are any free domain name services (ex. mysite.com). Do they exist?

You need to put the following text into your .htaccess folder located within your public_html or root folder on your server:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Check this site for further information:

You do not need any outside help as long as your server supports .htaccess files.

I am not aware of free domain services but i have experience with a company. They are really excellent in their customer support and they work round the clock. Just check out the link and contact them if you really like. I hope you'll like.

No, only subdomain names. You can however get your own domain name for as little as three bucks for the first year.
