Please do not report issues about parts that Dell did not design or make (like HDD, ODD, CPU, RAM, LCD); software issues)
What you can report: motherboard issues, chassis, overheating, etc.
BTW, what R&D does Dell do?

Do not take into regard customer service.
Btw, many parts are interchangeable. Also integrated NIC cards are standard in all computers no matter the brand so that's not a flaw.

I'll get to the bottom line right away:
The more popular the product is, the more buyers
The more buyers, the more profit
The more profit, the more growth for the company
The bigger the company (in all terms) the more problems
The more problems, the more prone to mismanagement
The more mismanaged, the more people will hate it.
The asker of this question asked "Why do people hate Dell?". Why didn't he ask "Why do people hate Micron?"
Basically, only few knows Micron, and many people know Dell. So it seems to many that nobody hates Micron (http://www.micron.com). Percentage-wise, it could be true that only a few perecentage of customers hate Micron due to the fact that their company being way smaller than Dell - is very manageable. In contrast, Dell being so huge - is totally a mismanaged company.
Hope my answer is statisfactory, cheers!

Because their support has gone drastically downhill since 1998-2001. Now however they are demanding at least an A+ certification and we'll see if that helps. Dell also has intergrated parts that before were easily replaced ie NIC Card was a plug in now it's intergrated to fix it now you need a whole new motherboard. I still like Dell, but then I was a tech, supervisor, and trainer for their customer support in 1998-2000. I call in now just to get help with a driver and they read me a script...no thanks. I now just go to the site. Personally most problems occur with Windows OS, I'm thinking maybe a MAC next time...and that my friend is a strong comment from someone who has never liked MAC's, but they have less viruses, less security problems and most important No Windows OS.

Main reasons I hate Dell:
#1. They bundle WAAAY too much junk software with their computers.
#2. They are very cheap, all their money is indeed coming from bundling software and being popular which makes the general public think they are good.
#3. I like to know what is in my computers.
#4. They have poor design and major heat issues causing them to be unstable and slow.
#5. Is that they do not help you with anything. I know you asked not to mention service, but it is a very important factor. I deal with them lots buying from them in bulk for my school. It is not fun.
#6. Look at their partitioning, I have no clue why, but they have four partitions. DELETE THEM ALL, and reformat to get rid of bundled software. That is a start. You will notice an increase of performance after that.
#7. They charge too much.
#8. They bought out Alienware. I would never buy an Alienware but I loved their work. It is upsetting to me that they would die because of Dell.

Well I have a Dell laptop that will not charge the battery simply because the smart battery chip was preprogrammed to only allow 180 charge/discharge cycles ( even though the cells are rated at 800) and a replacement battery is over $200.

ppl who really want control over the components of their system hate dell. they don't offer any real customizations (unless you think choosing 1 vs 2 gb of ram is customizing)
and they get most of their components from the low bid-of-the-month club....whoever happens to have the cheapest sticks of ram this month is what they're putting in the box
on the other hand, i usually recommend the dell to people who just want a system hassle free. it's quick to order and you pick up the 3 year warranty so no real headaches. if you're not doing any heavy encoding or running any advanced games they'll hook you up with a system that runs worry free

I simply dont care for them because their support has gone downhill to being some of the worst, their systems arent very upgradable, you cant purchase aftermarket parts and install them, most of them have to be replaced with OEM Dell parts which cost a fortune!

rumors are that boards, drives and intergation are not as good as other name brand items. Like fast food, remember when they first start they give you the good stuff but later that changes to cheaper but priceyer? stuff.
