You start dialating before you ever start real contractions. You have what is called Braxton Hicks, which causes your uterus to contract and causes the baby to go into the birth canal. The closer you are to your due date, the more you dialate. You can be 2 cm for two weeks and still not go into labor. If you are 4 or more cm's then you are in labor. It may not be active, but you are close to the birth of your baby! : )

How far along are you? If you are prior to 34-35 weeks and are dilating with out contractions then you may have an incompetent cervix. An incompetent cervix can cause you to dilate without contractions or any other signs of labor. This generally leads to premature delivery and many times death of the baby. If you are prior to 34 weeks you should see a parenatologist about putting in a cervical cerclage (a stitch that holds you cervix close). If your regular OB says that you "may" have a cervical incompetence but that is can not be diagnosed until you have preterm deliveries previously then you should see another doctor. This used to be what doctors thought but recently doctors have found that if you dilate without signs of labor and if the baby is genetically sound then you are positive for cervical incompetence.

Yes I was 2cm for 2 weeks before I finally had labor contractions. My mother in law was 5 cm for 2 weeks before she had my husband. So just hang in there, it's coming!

Yes you can.
Especially if its's not your first pregnancy.
But dont get too hopeful as the good old pains will soon come into action.
