I recently changed my starter in my 96 silverado. Tonight I drove over some railroad tracks and my car instantly died. I had power in the truck I just couldn't give it gas. I coasted on to the side of the road, got underneath and discover my nut had come off of one of the cables to the starter. I found another nut and tightened it with my fingers. It still won't start. Turns over but dies instantly.. Is it still the nut or could something else have gone wrong?

Sorry my car knowledge is limited..The truck won't turn over at all but its not the battery or alt.

The wire that is loose is the larger of the two. I would imagine that is the battery cable but I'm not sure.

The cable didn't appear to come off of the starter.

maybe the nut isnt tight enough.sounds like there is something else went wrong, when you hit the bump.you say it starts up,but dies, then check to see if its getting gas.it might be the gas filter.

I just worked on a 99 alero, starting problem,no lights they go thru ign switch. Before I worked on car,Someone had sold New Alt.and Battery,I started looking I started to go to sw wire that goes to starter, while moving things around,I noticed Pos Cable on starter End slightly loose,I tightened it ,Bingo everthing worked.I believe loose cable ends cause Alt & Batt. change more than anything else,Esp. In cold weather.Finger tight No good, take both off scrape then tighten. To proper torque.By the way I could only get 3/4 turn on nut,That fixed car, The simple things ,

I am not acquianted with this car but on my VW bus the starter stud also has a wire which powers the ignition wiring. Look for another wire that may have slipped off the stud. If worse comes to worse you might be able to jury rig a wire to the igition coil from the battery--since you do have power to turn over. But this probably only works on an engine as simple as the VW. I have driven home on alligator clips. You need to remove them to stop the engine.

when you say it dies instantly, does that mean it turns over then runs then dies or it turns over but will not run. Which nut came off, the one from the battery cable or the one on the wire from the switch?

did the cable come off the starter? check your fuses because if the cable hit the block or frame it could of blowen a fuse.
