You shouldn't have to. Your new boss should send out an email or post a notice congratulating you on your new position.

NEVER EVER NEVER EVER think that your friendship with a co-worker will be stronger than the envy and jealousy that co-workers always have for one another! There is NO GOOD that will come from you telling your friend / co-worker that you got a promotion! And if you don't beliefe me, then tell them! See what happens! And then email me in 3 months to let me know if you're still friends! I DOUBLE DOG DARE YA!

Why are you worried? You should be so excited about recieving this news!! Your co-worker is obviously a close friend, so will be super happy and supportive for you regardless. And hey, even if she does feel maybe a little jealous, it won't affect your friendship. True friends are there always.

who cares...just tell her. maybe take her to lunch and tell her you don't want her to be hurt by this news and you will give her advice or something if she wants to get promoted too. both of you are there to 1)either move up within the company or 2) get experience and get a better opportunity at another firm. you became friends out of convenience. believe me, you will be average friends at best if one of you leaves the company. always happens. don't sweat it and congrats!

arrange surprising but a small party in your office during working hrs.
first thank all co workers for their timely kind help and cooperation.
and do not forget to invite and thank your boss.

let your boss or HR person do the spreading of the news... it wasn't your decision to be promoted it was agreed upon by your direct superior & management team.. this should be awake up call for her that she should work harder if she also wants a promotion

If she is a true friend she will be happy for you, if she resents you.......well then you know that she isn't a true friend
