I am a proud member of a sorority and I would not discourage anyone from becoming a member of one. I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta, which is a public service sorority, and even as a child I was a girl scout. Being a member of this sorority is like being in the girl scouts, but for women. The other persons in the sorority are NOT your friends, they actually ARE your sisters, and I never quite grasped that until I went through the process and you see how close you can get to these ladies... you'd see that they are worth much more than friends. (the reason why I made sure to say this is that people are usually quick to say that you don't need to pay for friends... You do not have to pay for friends, and what you pay for is for the programs that your sorority would have going on.) A lot of the operations that the sorority would have would be voluntary, but sororities often sponsor scholarships and mentorship programs for young girls (usually) and trust me, the dues that you pay towards that would go towards those causes. My sorority, for instance often participates with Habitat for Humanity and Highway Maintenance, and trust me, these programs will need money, so again, you would see where your dues go.
I would suggest, though that you do lots of research before you decide to join. Look at the history of the sorority, because it's always good to see what the cornerstones of the sorority are, and whether you want to be liased with that, but really what decided it for me was how the ladies on my campus behaved. There was a lot of infighting and partying and just plain lewdness with the other sororities, and I didn't quite care for that, but the one of which I am a member, they were very dignified, but FUN at the same time. If you are someone who likes to party etcetera, then make sure that you get with people who are on the same wavelength as you.
All in all, think long and hard before you make your decision, and just know that this is a decision FOR LIFE. Good luck!

I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. I pledged in Spring 97, my junior year of college. To me, it was a wonderful experience being a part of a sorority. I have so many fond memories of going through the pledging process. Getting to know and bond with my line sisters. After we crossed the burning sands and actually became a part of the sorority it was awesome. I have no regrets about pledging or what I had to go through to get in.

Well I guess it depends on what sort of a person you are. Sororities are very good for some people but others not so much.

They tell people to do all sorts of dumb things JUST so they can "belong." They're for jocks and barbies who just want to be the same as everyone else and feel like they fit in. And are rich... And pay for friends. 98% of them have blonde highlights.
