I eat them a lot though it's hard to find a good one in my area (Los Angeles). If i'm not mistaken, the best ones are ones that are soft, which are the sweetest ones. It's best when you eat the ones that aren't frozen. Ususally, you should open mangosteens with a sharp knife or something like that since it's hard to open with your hands. I hope this answer helped you a little bit.

Garcinia Mangostana, commonly called Mangosteen, is a fruit that has been used for thousands of years in Chinese, Aryuvedic, and Folk medicine in Asia. It is also grown and used for medicinal purposes in South America, Central America and Africa. Unlike the Aloe Vera, at the time of the Mangosteen's introduction , it's use is already world-wide and not restricted to one geographical area.
The Mangosteen (once again unlike aloe vera, which had but a few usages) has a broad spectrum of traditional medicinal uses in the countries where it is grown:
Anti-diarrheal and cure for parasites.
Anti-inflammatory (used both internally and externally on the body)
Pain control
Treatment of infections (for both internal and external use)
Fever control
Gastro-intestinal problems
Skin rashes and burns
Headaches
Anti-parasitic (malaria, syphilis)
Mirroring it's use in the traditional medicinal arena, practitioners use the drink for patients with the following problems:
Gastro - intestinal conditions
Musculo - skeletal and joint problems where pain and swelling are present
Skin conditions (i.e. eczema, psoriasis and seborrhea)
Headaches
Pain control (both inflammatory and neurological pain, including sciatica and radicular pain symptoms)
Control of blood sugar in most diabetics
Infections (viral, bacterial, and fungal)
Mouth ulcers (aphtous)
Allergies
Prevention of Atherosclerosis (the condition that can lead to strokes and heart attacks)
Anti-aging concerns
Dementia
Anxiety and depression (mild to moderate)
Cancer (along with standard medical therapy)
Pysicians who have found numerous conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Peripheral neuropathy, and Dementia almost impossible to treat effectively with standard medicines, have welcomed this new agent which provides striking results in many of their patients. They also use it in conditions like Migrane headaches, auto - immune disorders (such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus) inflammatory bowel disease, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), and Ulcers.
These are all conditions for which expensive medicines exist, but all these medicines often have dangerous side-effects. Being able to treat safely and effectively is, after all,the primary goal of every physician who has sworn:
"Primum non nocere" ("First do no harm")
Drugs are dangerous and foods, as supplements, are not.

It's a juice. It may be healthful, especially compared to what people are normally drinking these days.
It is not a standardized supplement. That means that if you drank an entire case, you would receive certain nutrients and phytochemicals over the average of everything you drank. However they do not promise (at least they're not allowed to) any specific levels of nutrients per serving.
