Could someone please tell me or give me a link to explain how the retail industry works and how the stores profit from it- i need statistics mostly

Your question is very broad and there is not going to be a single link to explain how fashion retailing works. The first link below is the Wikipedia article on Fashion. The second link is to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), a college that is part of the State University of NY. FIT is in New York City and it is probably the premier college for fashion design and retailing in the US. You can access some of FIT's library through the school's Web site.
