Every sorority chapter is different, and each chapter of the same group differs from campus to campus. Yes, there are the 'elite' looking girls in many chapters but you also find these girls hanging out on the couch in flannels eating popcorn on a Saturday night. It's not all about looks, money, partying and image. It really isn't.

You need to take the time to really look at the organization as a whole and how they serve the community and their members. GLO members historically have higher GPAs than campus average, donate thousands of hours to community service, are active leaders on campus and provide safe living environments for their members. In addition, all the national sororities offer millions of dollars of academic scholarships to their members, a strong support structure and yes, networking opportunities.

My experience was on a small commuter campus with no housing, not even dorms. Had it not been for my involvement in my sorority, I would have had a poor college experience. I certainly didn't 'buy' my friends, but sorority membership gave me the opportunity to meet a group of women that I may not have otherwise met through classes OR the other campus organizations in which I was involved. Because of my membership I was able to make friends with other alumnae of my sorority (and others!) across the country during moves for career and personal reasons.

Do your research before making a harsh judgement - just as people differ from campus to campus, so do organizations such as GLOs.

I was not in a sorority, so my opinion is biased, but I was once in a sorority house and it scared me. There we posters up about not eating and the atmosphere was pure exclusion. I didn't find it very welcoming. I also worked with a lot of sororities, and they were so overdramatic. Of course, you just have to find the right sorority.

Oh, and they even made all the girls buy the same belt! It was a little sick. I think it's a waste of money if you are paying your own way through college. Join free clubs instead.

I regret not rushing my freshman year to see which house I would have at least gotten in! It's great for meeting "the right" people and networking for the future.

Too "cookie cutter" conformistic for me.
