I am writing a paper about why prostitution should be illegal. I want to say that it would be harmful for society. Would i say "it would have a negative affect on society" or "it would have a negative effect on society."?

Use effect. Prostitution will affect society as a whole but it will have a negative effect upon it.

Effect.

There is cause and effect, which is what you are applying this too.

Affect is something personal, think like affection.

Use the verb affect when you mean to influence rather than to cause.

So, I would go with the word affect or the word influence.
