She has scratched up my furniture tops which I have to re-varnish and my husband has to show me how. I speak a moderate level of Spanish but she has been in the country for 15 years and can't speak a word of English? What do I do?

Sounds like it's time for a new maid.

Well first you could pull her aside in a nice manner and show her which products work best for you. Just show her the bottle or what you want and if not you could stop being lazy and do it yourself. Is it that hard to clean up after yourself? Besides no one can do a job better than yourself. Also you could take some lessons from someone on living life for yourself because what you are telling us is the maid cleans up after you and your husband has to show you how to do things. Any thing you can do with out someone else holding your hand? If you are so upset try getting a maid that speaks english. I am sure they will wipe your azz the same way.

When it comes to hiring and firing people (domestic help or in business), it is wise to take a long time to hire the right person, and then when it is realized the person is not right for the job, it is wise to get rid of the person quickly.

It is quite obvious it is time to let her go, and you need to do it quickly. You can easily replace her with someone who can do the job not to mention someone that will show you and your home respect.

Then jump on Craig's List for your city in the domestic gigs area, and post an ad for a new housekeeper. State exactly what you are looking for, and I would suggest requiring one to be able to read and speak English. Then phone interview 3 to 4 persons, and then set up in-person meetings with at least 3 persons and show him/her exactly what you are looking for (even have a list). Treat it as a job search, and you will find someone fantastic.

Now, on Craig's List, I would state in your ad that you require a copy of the person's Driver's License and 3 references. Also, state that you will require a W-9 to be filled out. These three requirements will flush out the dopes.

You can easily replace her. Good luck with this.

By the way, I am an Executive Recruiter in Marketing, as well as Accounting & Finance, and I approached my search for a new housekeeper in this same manner, and it works! Email me, and I'll send you my ad I use on Craig's List!

Hire a new maid who is not so dumb. and dont hire people who can speak no english if you cannot speak spanish, thats just trouble, also people who live here and want to work in occupations that have to deal with other people should be encouraged to learn english. only hiring people who know some english will help this along.

Sounds like she is doing that on purpose. Spanish or not, a maid knows not to use dish soap on furniture.

It has in my experience that you have to beable to communicate with your help or in my case client, There are so many wonderful products out there if you want things cleaned with certain things go invest in spray bottles label them and post a list and you really might want to consider hiring someone who speaks english it will make everyone's life much easier and less expensive for you (having to revarnish furniture will stop)

sounds like you need to get another maid this one is costing you money. You can go to the trouble of showing her how you want things clean but good grief if you can't clean something simple and don't know what dawn is used for then get someone else. your just post-poning what will happen latter.

either get a translator or a new maid, although I bet she speaks way more English than she lets on.

do no longer use dish cleansing soap, you want to get a shampoo for rabbits or guinea pigs. you are able to also use non-medicated, non-insecticidal cat/kitten, dogs/domestic dog shampoos. Guinea pigs could in reality be bathed each 3 months at maximum.
