Really, it all boils down to what type of running you are doing. Cross Country, Track (Sprints, Long Distance, etc), recreational, or any other running. For Track, i always preferred Brooks, Asics, or Mizuno, but thats for track (i.e. shoes with spikes), but for cross country or rec. running, i liked any shoe that was lite, but had enough support and cushion on my feet. I'd check these stores, www.eastbay.com or www.firsttothefinish.com . They've always seemed to have the best selection and diversity of shoes. If going to those, check under X-country or running or on First to the Finish, Training Flats. Also, go to www.roadrunnersports.com and look, they will let you compare each shoe you select side by side.

The answer to your question all depends on what they will be used for. If they are for cross country, then you want ones specially made for cross country. The same goes for track, road, etc. shoes. Some are made to only accumulate a certain amount of mileage, etc. In terms of running shoes for training, any decent brand will do, such as Asics, Saucony, Adidas, Nike, etc. Saucony seems to be a favorite among top runners. In terms of shoes for racing, there are many styles and brands. Nike, Adidas, Saucony, are some examples of good brands. So, in response to your question, Saucony are probably the all around best running shoe.

Different shoes are good for different types of running and different people. There are a wide variety of support systems, styles, comfort levels, etc. I believe that Asics are the best because there are a wide variety for every kind of runner and every kind of foot.
