The 318 might be one of the top 2-3 engines of all time for ersatility and durability. I've seen old Dodge vans pull race cars across the country with 300,000 plus on them.
I'm not particularly a Dodge fan, but the 318 is a rock.

My father has a 1997 Dakota Sport with the 5.2L and she packs some punch. I work in a garage and I see very few of these in for repair work, and they are quite reasonable to repair. The only thing I've really seen them have work done on is the cooling system, and its not the most complicated setups, they jsut take time to do. I was going to buy a Dakota, but i bought my Ranger instead, the only thing that stopped me from the Dakota, was the price of my Ranger, (about 1/4 of what its worth, and its in next to mint condition.) otherwise I would ahve bought a 1995 Dakota with the 5.2L. Good engine. Strong and powerful.

Yes, the 318 was a very good engine. Dodge has been using it for many, many years. With the right maintenance it should do 200,000 mi. and, depending on how you drive, and the gear ratio, 18 or so mi per gal.

i had 2 of them, and they were damn good engines.i had 1 in a dodge coronet and 1 in a dodge polara, both of them were really good engines.if you get a good 1,hang on to it.they just run and run and run,as long as you keep the oil changed, they cant be beat.
