so i found a lump in one of my breasts. i think i definitely need to get it checked out. no one in my family has ever had breast cancer that we're aware of (all though other cancers do run in my family) i'm only 27 but i know some people get cancer at young ages. the question i have though is do i go to a regular physician or do i go to an ob/gyn? when ever i go for my yearly check up they always check my breasts so that's why i was wondering if that's who i would go to now.

the first thing to remember is 4/5 of all breast lumps turn out to not be cancer, but you should definately get it checked. You can just go to your family doctor and he/she will probably recomend a mommogram (which no matter what age you are you should go in every year for one) Good luck with everything and I hope all turns out well for you

I also found this website which should help you:

Any physician can send you in for a mammogram, so get into the one that can take you first. I would call your regular doctor and tell them you found a lump, they'll probably have you in for a stat mammogram that same day. Your OB/gyn isn't the one to see. Your regular primary care physician is the one that you should start with. At my annual physicals both my internist and my Ob check my breasts. I'd call the non-OB doctor.

You'll have to wait for the radiologist to call your doctor back with results, but under the circumstances they'll probably get back to you pretty quickly.

My mom found a lump, had it removed and it wasn't cancer. She had the lump removed and her doctor had pathology report in hand within a few hours. It goes pretty quick when there is a lump and if it doesn't, call them and give them hell.

Get to the doctor ASAP, either one can order a mammogram and biopsy, but usually you would go to your ob/gyn. There does not need to be a family history of breast cancer for you to get it. And age does not matter either. My mom was 35 when she had breast cancer, and the doctor told her that based on the tumor, it had probably been growing in her for about 3 years by the time they caught it. She is now a 24+ year survivor.

First, don't get to hyper about this. Your regular Dr. or ob/gyne can refer you to have a mammogram. This can rule out alot of things like cyst, fibroscytic breast disease and if further testing is needed. My ob/gyn sent me directly to the surgeons office for an ultrasound after my lump showed up on a mammogram. He was able to do a "needle biopsy" where he took a sample with a syringe and a needle right therein the office. Hardly hurts at all. He was able to say after just looking at the specimen that it was probably nothing and he was right. If I had gone to the hospital for an ultrasound I would have still had to go to the surgeon so this cut out the time, worry and cost of the hospital. Any way the most important thing to remember is that 90% of breast biopsy's are NEGATIVE.

What you really need to do is get a trio of tests- an ultrasound, a mammogram, and a biopsy. You can still have cancer, even if the ultrasound does not show it. Ultrasounds and mammograms are less effective for people our age because we have denser breasts. The pamphlet "Understanding Breast Changes" states that the only way to be sure is a biopsy. If the lump is small, you may be able to get a Needle Core Biopsy, if it is of any signficant size, you will want an excisional biopsy.

The physician who normally does your yearly well woman exams can see you for this. They can do the exam as well as refer you on to for a mammogram or other appropriate testing. It's good that you are doing your own self breast exams and was able to identify this. You're right, breast cancer is not prevalent in younger women so hopefully it's just a cyst. Nevertheless, call your health care provider and get an appt. scheduled soon. Take care.

Call your regular physician and ask. S/he may want to see you and then have you get a mammogram and/or ultrasound. Remember, a lot of lumps aren't cancer so don't stress out until you know more.

Take care of you.

Does the lump move? Is it painful? Are you close to your cycle? You could go to either but ob/gyn is better. Lumps that move are just cysts and most cases if it is painful it's a cyst as well. Also caffeine is a big culprit...

Go to a gynecologist and get a mammogram and ultrasound scheduled. It may be nothing, but don't wait on it. Early detection is the best cure. My mom had breast cancer and she had it detected early. Take care.

First off ... Hopefully this tunrs out to be nothing most of the time it's just a cyst. I have had 2.

Anyway I dont really think it matter which doc you go to cuz both will probably do the same thing for you like sending you for an ultrasound.

Good luck
