there are a total of 6 TORX screws on the bottom you must have a torx driver to remove them. they are under the rubber pads, xbox sticker, and serial number sticker. the case should simply lift away. be carefull around the cd drive front because my stupid brother broke mine off when he took the cover off. you need to be supper carefull when removing the cd drive and hard drive(drives on top after you remove the cover) that you remember where everything is, and how it is held down. use a vacum hose to suck out the dust. pay extra atention to the cooling fins and cooling fan.
i try to clean my xbox every 6 months to ensure fast loading times, eficient cooling, and safty from fire hazards.
now there are (to my knowledge) 5 vertions of the xbox. i beleve that i have the first one. later vertions may be different, but this is my play by play instructions on how to do it.
remove anything that is covering the skrews on the bottom
use a T15 Torx driver to remove all 6 screws
flip the xbox right side up and lift up on the top of the case.
remove the flat gray wires and the red/yellow/black wires from the hard drive(shaped like a wierd figure 8) make sure that you untuck the wires from the litle clips that hold them in place, and drape them on the outside of the unit.
remove the same flat grey wires from the cd drive(large square gray box) as well as the yellow wires. drape them over the outside of the unit too. you may need to use a flat screw driver to pull the yellow wire harness out of the drive.
use a T10 torx driver to remove a small screw from the black devider between the cd and hard drives. then, lift the hard drive upwards out of the unit.(place somewere away from magnetic fields)
use T10 torx driver to remove small screws located next to the cd drive(near front, their are 2 of them, on either side of the front of the drive) it is down deeper than the last one
the unit is now fully dissasembled. now you can vacum it out. make sure to pay special atention to the fans and heat sinks.
That answer was taken from one of my older answers for a guy who wanted to dust out the inside of his x box (still an answer from me, not plagerised)
I actualy wrote that answer as I dissasembled my X Box. look around for charring. I had a problem with mine where the power cord plugged into the back. the mount had broken and i was getting big blue sparks when I pluggedmy X Box into the wall. if you see charring around there you will need to sodder over the area, just find someone who can sodder.
Dont waste your time calling microsoft. they will charge you like 50 bucks in shipping to fix it. and that was the last time i checked when they were just like a year and a half old. i dont know if they will even repair them anymore. I do remember finding new circuit boards on ebay. just the one off to the side that handles the power, not the big one with the chips all over it.

unplug the xbox get a knife and remove the rubber grips on the bottom to access the screws plus there is one screw hidden underneath the silver sticker possibly 2 i cant quite remember, but anyways u will need a torque screwdriver to remove screws then just take it apart, when your inside take out the few screws to remove the hard drive and the dvd drive unplug the connectors and clean all the dust /hair that is inside it with damp (not wet) clothe the fan can be removed easily and cleaned with a q tip or you could just blow all the dust out manually, put it all back together and see how its works.just make sure nothing is wet when you plug it back in.now plug it in without the cover back on that way if it is smoking from something burning you will be able to see where it comes from.if it was only dust your problem should be fixed.if its a-ok then put cover back on screw it together and enjoy your gameing. Best Of Luck.

If it doesn't boot up immediately and fails to display a screen and start-up sounds, disconnect. Serious problems. If it works and heats up and smells of burning after operating for a short time, the fan might be clogged up with dust or has failed. Best not to try to fix yourself. Find someone who has some experience. These units tend to run hot and eventually fail if run extensively without adequate cooling. Good luck!

Call the 1-800 number immediately. X-Boxes are notorious for overheating. They can cause large scale fires. DO NOT TURN IT ON AGAIN.
