Just about anything can be made funny, especially for that age group -- think about ages 7-11.

Do you remember anything you found funny at that age? What made you and your friends just fall down laughing?

What about an older sibling trying to be "grown up?"
A pet snake/spider/etc gets loose?
Or... Trying to keep a pet a secret - like hiding a cat under a bed or on a bookcase - trying to keep it from parents who don't want kids to have a pet?

Themes in a lot of children's lit include kids on their own, kids/animals connection, school, "strange" things happening.

Try to make your protagonist about 2 years older than the age of the reader you're aiming for - something I learned in children's lit studies. Kids like to project ahead a couple years.

Wiping your bum after pooping. It would be all like "I hope its clean" and illustrate a surprised happy and hopeful face, and then be all like "Nope. Its a truckload" And have the guy be all happy but not knowing (raising shoulders). and have a whole story about it. Like he will have it all wiped out right, and then he'll go for a check wipe, and THEY'LL BE MORE. But eventually he'll finish it and be all good, and the toilet will plug, and he'll have a shenanigan. In the end no one will know it was him. It'll be called "ADVENTURES IN POOPING."
