I ask this because I am planning to volunteer internationally before I go to grad school next year and a female here basically told me that I should leave the volunteering to the professionals because I do not have much experience. (BTW: I am a member of a national volunteer group, I became certified in CPR and First AID in junior high school and I know Spanish, Italian, Chinese, and Arab). Basically, the woman told me I am not effcient because I am not a professonal like her.

Without a doubt. It's all about competition and the more they can "one up" you, the happier they are. It sounds like she may be threatened by you and is trying to make you feel incompetent. Don't listen. It sounds like you are more than qualified! It's sad, but you need to develop tough skin because life is full of people like that.

Trust me, I am not like that.

No. Its not about gender, its about individuals. Some people are critical of others while some are not, irrespective of gender. However, remarks from others should not get you down specially when you are off to do something good. People assess others in a variety of different ways. Sometimes they don't see others' full potential, sometimes they underestimate and sometimes they are outright jealous or insecure. Lets not make asumptions about this person's intentions but for you the thing to do is to go ahead if you really feel like doing it. Also you are doing it to put in your own little bit and even if you are no great star, you would've done your bit and thats all that matters. So go for it!

I think so, because many of us see each other as competition for the things we want in life. In this case, the woman you spoke to considers herself a "professional." I think she wants to keep this label, and she doesn't want you in her "territory", so to speak. She wants to rule out the competition so that she can feel more important because the number of people with her status is fewer. It happens a lot nowadays, since women have more freedoms and opportunities for success than ever before.

it depends what it is, but i think in general, the answer to your question is yes.

about what that person said to you, don't feel bad. She doesn't know what she's talking about and is a total idiot. Do not feel incompetent because you know what your abilities are...

to get back to your question, guys aren't really critical of other guys...they are critical of having their egos shattered. It's a really vague question..i hope you find the answer you're looking for.

Yes I think women are much more...well...b*tchy than men are (pardon my language.) I am a man and men are critical of women, yes, but women are hypercritical of women. Women gossip more and are more "catty", men don't really care that much.
