Ok First I just want to say that I am only 19 years old and do NOT plan on getting pregnant for at least another 5 years. Anyway, a family friend (who is in her mid thirties) just found out she is infertile and has tried almost all options, and she is really depressed about it. Now, I am worried that I could be infertile. I know I shouldnt worry about it now, but I wanted to know what causes it and if there is anything I can do to prevent it (if thats the case).
Also, I have been on bc pills for about a year and am planning to take them until I get married (that can be years) so I was wondering if that would effect it?

and Is there a test that can be done on a woman to see if she is fertile, while still being on bc?

Thanks

It is a good idea to think about things like this while you are young but it important to not obsess over it. First off, the pill will not cause you to be infertile so don't worry about that. (a friend of mine was on the pill for 17 years and got pregnant the first month she went off without a problem). Did you have regular periods before you went on the pill? If so, this is a good indication that things are fine. If you were irregular but started to be regular once on the pill then you should be fine too...it means that you are ovulating and are on a good schedule. Remember to get your yearly pelvic's and your dr can tell you if there are any cysts or abnormalities and if you are still worried ask you Dr to take a better look during your next pelvic. Good Luck!!!!

there really isn't anything you can do while on bcp. if you have regular periods then you are probably ovulating. use condoms to help prevent infections and to protect your cervix, which also protects your fertility. it is too soon for you to worry about being infertile. have annual gyn exams. bcp's really shouldn't have much of an impact, but that really depends on how regular your cycles were before you went on them.

the causes of infertility(defined as a year of trying with well timed sex and no live birth) are
1) problems with ovulation (PCOS, prolactin imbalance, thyroid)
2) early menopause (usually genetic)
3) blocked fallopian tubes (usually due to infection)
4) other structural issues
5) immune issues (woman's body fights the sperm) --this is usually easily corrected
6) unexplained

Has your family friend tried acupuncture and herbs?

I am not sure about how it's caused and stuff, but you can go to the doctors and get tests done on your fertility and they can let you know if anything is wrong! Good luck!
