A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, so expect to spend 8 - 10 years in school after high school.

To prepare in high school take high levels of everything from math to science, to social studies, to English. And be sure to take psychology, sociology, and load up on Biology.

Good luck!

Psychiatrists must go through normal medical doctor training, so AP science and math would be great preparation for pre-med in college. But also, take courses on just about anything else, like languages and history. High school is just the beginning and you need to get exposure to many different subject areas in order to decide if this is the path you really want to take in life.

If your school offers AP classes that would help a lot...especially taking AP Biology and AP Psychology would be great as well. Also add in a couple of math classes but the math shouldn't be too advanced. Chemistry as well would not be too bad.

In college, you get to specifically pick your classes so it's easier because you can get classes that you specifically want for your career.

Types of classes in high school really do not matter. For college is just depends on the grades you get and whether you challenged yourself. So take what you enjoy. Harder classes like college prep, honors, and AP look the best and prepare you for college level classes.

A Psychiatrist is a doctor. Science courses.... an undergrad degree (4 years) + medical degree (another 4) + interning...
a psychiatrist deals with medical issues causing mental disorders, not psychological (behavioural) issues.....

tee hee hee...girl, don't listen to everyone here...honestly ask your high school counselor, she will be the ONLY one who can tell you this with a straight face okay?

The reason i tell you this is because it depends on sooo many things...what college you are applying for and location just to name a couple things.

Generally to get your PhD in psychiatry you are looking at a min. of 6-8 yrs of college full time....yes i said minimum.

in all honesty...high school courses dont matter all that much...psychiatrist can maybe end up with you getting your doctorate..which means at least 3 years of undergrad (depending on credits, semesters, etc) then at least 1 year for your masters, and then at least 1-2 for your doctorate...

however, if you do still want to take classes to "prep" you for that profession in high school....biology, sociology, health, psychology....anything that has to do with the wellness of people and medicine...
