In the book "The Gunslinger" in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King why does he let Jake die.?

I think it is becuase the man in black made him but is it supposed to be that he is that cold and does not care about anything or what?Also do we find out what happens to jake later(if so do not tell me what happens only that we find out).The best answer wins

It's because of his obsession with the Dark Tower. He can't save Jake because he's keeping him from getting to the Tower. He's lured to it like a drug. You do find out what happens. Piece of advice - when you get to the 7th novel, DON'T read the extra ending.

Yes, it is supposed to be that Roland is cold and only cares for the Tower, that's one of the points of the series.

Yes, we find out what happens to Jake.

I'd suggest picking up the remainder of the series right away, it's very good.
