Origin: during Prohibition, people smuggled liquor into the country using various stratagems including women in the long dresses of the period wearing enormous special-made boots (sort of like hip waders) in which bottles could be concealed. Smugglers who did this were called "bootleggers" and their swag "bootleg whiskey" or whatever the booze was. Somehow the term crossed over into counterfeit goods and copyright infringement.

An illegal copy of something. In movies, maybe someone would sneak a camera into a movie theater and tape the movie. If that person then sold that illegal recording, that would be a bootleg.
