I'm not talking about a state resident or other legally binding status. I'm talking about when they say someone is a "true New Yorker". There is an old wives type deal that says that there is a certain number of years before you can call yourself a New Yorker, and I want to say it's 7 years, but... does anyone know what I'm talking about?

If you asked this question to an old time manhattan man they would tell you that there is only on kind of "true" new yorker, and that's a man (or woman) who is born and raised in manhattan.

Of course times have changed a bit, and so have the boundries.

A true new yorker to me is one who was born and raised within the state of NY, not just manhattan. Of course if you move to NY and early enough in life, I suppose you can claim the title as well.

I don't believe that a 30 something can just move to NY and by age 50 claim to be a true NYer. Being a New Yorker isn't just a title. It's a lifestyle. It's inside of you. It's the way you act, talk, think, thrive and project.
