Hi, im just looking to get some good answers regarding hitch hiking. I pick up hitch hikers all the time who explain to me how it can be the best experience of your life. YOu meet amazing people and have great conversations while traveling for very little money. I realize there is a risk of getting killed, but i plan to carry a knife strapped to my leg under my pants, and a can of mase strapped to my belt.

any suggestions? I want to travel from boulder colorado first week of april to san fransisco, up to portland oregon and bellingham washington. then back down and maybe hit mexico before returning in the midle of may to boulder.

experiences and suggestions are appreciated. And please, save your breath on the NO, dont do its--i realize that a majority of people say this before asking the question in the first place. Thanks!
Evan

My boyfriend and I hitchhiked across the US, but that was back in 1976. It was interesting and a couple of times I was scared, but we made it and lived to tell the tale.

There are people who are lonely and would appreciate the company, if they figure you are not likely to kill them. One time we got picked up by a couple of guys who wanted us to do some of the driving, which we did, of course.

If you go, good luck.

I only had few, mostly short trip, not yet done any long trip.
I did ask people about hitch hiking myself few days back, i got few good answer.

I had so far, i done hitch hiking in Europe for the most part. The rule are easy to understand, mostly about will get arrest if on freeway or highway. I like used the safe road mostly two lane road and sometime the truck stop or rest stop and mostly gas station.
Just about safes and you can carry a knife if you really need to.
If lucky there are few people out on the road, who are lone driving to wherever they need to go and sometime ask if you can do some driving in exchange or just pay only one time for gas.

Other way are helping out with the big truck, unload and load.
That had work for me before.
However Mexico might not be a good idea, unless you can speak Spanish.

So good luck and have a safe trip.
