they get absorbed from other things. Like, you get taller by your bones growing. In order for bones to grow, it needs calcium. And we get calcium from milk. We use stuff from the things we consume to enable our bodies to grow.
Same thing with plants. Plants need energy to grow. So they use water, carbon dioxide and light to get the energy to function their chemical processes.
Matter does not get created nor destroyed, we are just using matter in a completely different form to function for our purposes.

Matter can not be created nor destoyed but it can be "recylcled." That's how things grow.
Plants use the nutrients in the soil;
the carbon dioxide in the air;
the rain or the water;
Put it all together and you have GROWTH!

Matter changes shape and state. Obviously a solid is going to take up more space than a gas. Cells are created but not matter itself.

When things grow, they use matter from other materials or compounds. When you eat food, the molecules in the food, carbs, fats, proteins, vitamins, ions etc are all used for yourself. There is no destruction or creation of atoms, just the breaking and rearranging of bonds between the atoms.

Matter can be moved. And when you grow, you incorporate atoms that were part of some other object or living tissue into your body. Yes, it is possible that you have an atom in your body that once was possessed by Julius Caesar, or Hitler, or an elephant.

Simple, matter can change forms-- so it goes from being nutrients and water in the soil-- to new cells. Remember what mom said, "You are what you eat!"
