Other employees in my department were notified that I was getting fired before my employer talked to me. Is this legal?

of course they will someone has to fire you and HR dept has to have a reason to back the firing. Rest is a matter of need to know. Your peers should not be privy to that information before you are terminated, it's speculation or gossip, your only fired when your told to not report to work for cause and you would be the first to know that.

It's legal, but chances are it will be done by rumor. You'll know first before anyone else knows, except maybe your supervisors.

Probably, because there's no way to PROVE they didn't hear simply by eavesdropping.
