D4- 4th gear, this is what you keep it in most of the time, during normal driving

D3- 3rd gear, for that hill that slows you down, you can shift to third instead of stepping on the gas

2- 2nd gear, use this for mountain or dirt trail driving etc., or to get off the line faster when the road is wet or icy

1- 1st gear, use this for steep mountains, rough dirt trails, etc.

1st to 4th gear. They are just drive gears. You can manually shift the car by switching from 1 thru 4. Nice thing about having the ability to shift gears with the automatic is that in winter you are able to start from 2nd gear and get a lot better traction from a stop. But...that is the positive here in the Midwest...I am sure there are a lot more...but hey...that's all I got.

They are lower gears and used to keep the tranny from getting into overdrive. Say you are in town and you dont want the car to keep going through all the gears. It also good when you are in snow to keep traction and manual control over the tranny. Check your car manual and it will better explain it.
