I want to make masks of my entire family(children and grandchildren and spouses). My Idea is to use gause impregnated with plaster of paris,( like they make casts for broken arms with.)...molding the wet gause over their faces(well greased of course and with nose holes)and making a sort of a mold of their face. Then use that mold to pour more plaster of paris or ? into to get a good image of their faces. I will remove the "faces" and use them for a mural for the wall.
What are the best materials to use?Your Help is appreciated....

The life casting materials you are looking for can be found at the website of a company called Smooth-On. I have used their products for years...and happened to notice they have really expanded their life casting line.

They even sell a new DVD that shows you how to do it. And, once you're done making the mold, you can use their products for the castings...which are much more durable than plaster, if that's important to you.

Do NOT do this. Plaster gets hot when it is setting and having hot hard plaster on the face is extremely panic prompting. It can get hot enough inside to burn (redden) the skin.
There are products on the market, unfortunately rather costly but reusable, like alginate and moulage, that melt over hot water and cool when put on. They are also flexible so don't get caught on the face. Normally, you put a plaster gauze backing on the goo as it firms up, but this is for support of the flexible goo when you put plaster in the mold to make the positive. Check theater makeup sites.
