Certainly not in Canada! If your physician is satisfied your illness warranted being off work, (s)he will issue a certificate for you to give to your employer. In my case, the certs. usually just advised that ill health prevented me from going to work. If a medical doctor is satisfied, then so should your employer. No doctor is even legally allowed to talk to your employer unless you authorize it in advance and clarify with your doc what specific info(s)he may release. If sick leave is abused/used too often, however, an employer is entitled to have you evaluated by a second doc of his choosing. What have you got to fear if your condition is real?

Your employer can ask anybody anything, except for a few things prohibited by law.
Your doctor should give you a work excuse, but should NOT answer any questions regarding your medical history or records to anyone except YOU.

No the employer can not ask why that would be an invasion of your privacy and the Doctor can not tell anyone why you were there without your permission and a signed document from you if he/she did they would lose their license to practice medicine

No, your doctor will NOT answer the question. That is priveleged informatino and unless you're being put on trial and your health is being put in question, the doctor must remain silent.
It's not your employer's business to know WHY you were there.

Your Doctor CAN tell him but it is against doctor/patient confidentiality and is inadmissible for grounds for any penalty, 99.9% of the time the Doctor will honor this rule.

If they do, you have a sweet lawsuit.
Your doctor BY LAW cannot reveal any personal information UNLESS you have a serious contagious disease like Ebola or radiation poisoning.

Your employer can ask anything he wants. However, your Dr. cannot give him any answer he wants. Either yes, you were there, or no you were not there. Everything else is Dr. patient confidentiality.

Not unless you authorize the release of that information. Your doctor is not even allowed to reveal that you are his/her patient without your permission.

Luckily it's against the law, unless you give permission by signing a release.
