It's a custom of modern historians. In university history courses in England, history to AD 500 is called ancient hisrtory, and history from AD 500 to the present is modern history. The people who lived through it didn't think that their's were the Dark Ages, or the Carolingian Renaissance. We who come after explain the differences between the cultures of the various centuries in our own language, trying to come to an understanding of their times.

I think it's because it is the time period between civilizations. The Dark Ages or Middle ages are the time inbetween the Classical period and the Renaissance period. The middle ages began with the fall of Rome.

Because once upon a time they were actually in the middle of identifiable human history (1100 to about 1450). Nowadays, Mediaeval (more than one spelling) is the safer term.

The so-called Dark Ages began with the Fall of Rome after which not many historical written records remain until the establishment of monastaries, where monks learned to write. The Middle Ages followed.
